"Damage costs associated with Calgary arsons have doubled over the past five years, leaving many more innocent residents affected by the actions of a few, says one of the city’s leading police investigators.

Staff Sgt. Scott Sampson with the arson unit said his team has handled a typical caseload in recent years but the location and nature of the incidents has seen many more homes affected.

“It really comes down to knowing your neighbours,” he advised. “If you see something suspicious, don’t sit back and do nothing.”

Citadel

December 2009

One notable file was the massive fire that occurred in Citadel in December 2009 where a marijuana grow operation caught on fire and destroyed 5 houses, 12 vehicles and caused 3.8 million dollars in damage. I was the primary and only investigator for this case. This extensive investigation involved a complex scene examination, numerous production orders, search warrants and over 40 interviews. I was able to secure a conviction against the tenant Russell McDougall who received a prison sentence of 7 years which was considered a new bench mark for Arson charges.
